I drove to New York City with my fiddle and my drawl
I stopped in for a cold one at this little Brooklyn bar
A stranger asked me what it was I had inside my case
I said it was my fiddle he said, "Let me hear you play"

So I rosined up my bow, sawed him off a course or two
He said, your fiddle's hot, I'd like to play along with you
He joined me on that stage ripped off the finest lick he knew
I said, "Your guitar's sounding fat tonight, why don't we play a few

I'm up from Carolina sir, how do you do".
He said, "I'm down from Detroit City ain't it fancy meetin' you"?

Hot fiddle, fat guitar.
We're tearin' it in up this here little bar
As we played on I noticed we began to draw a crowd
So we just kept on playin' that hot fiddle, that fat guitar

A drummer down from Boston set his kit up in a flash
Then a bass man from St. Louis with a pork-pie and a stash
Two more guitar players joined us on that tiny little stage
That little bar in Bed-Stuy was suddenly the rage

Owner came in through the back door he was listening to our sound
Then he told the waitress, "Pass that pork-pie hat around".
I ain't heard nothin' like this since I left Santa Fe
If you come back 3, 4 nights a week I'll build a bigger stage

I looked over at Detroit City , he looked back my way
He said If we're comin' back again, we'd best be getting' paid-- to play

CH 2
Hot fiddle, fat guitar.
'Cause we're tearin' up this here little bar
Crowd keeps getting' bigger, let's hope they sing along
So we just kept on playin' that hot fiddle, that fat guitar
